Tyson had been singing in Toronto bars as a solo artist before meeting Fricker, and the two decided to work together as a pair when a friend of Tyson heard her sing at a party and told Ian about her. Their full-time partnership began in 1961 and lasted for ten years. She and Ian Tyson headlined the country music band Great Speckled Bird from the late 1960s until the early 1970s.
Sylvia began a solo career when the Tysons split and ceased touring together in 1975; she recorded two albums on Capitol Records, Woman's World in 1975 and Cool Wind from the North in 1976.
